Charles Gillam is a self taught artist whose works depict the rich African-American culture of his native New Orleans. Using salvages furniture, architectural elements and mississippi river driftwood, Gillam fashions the likenesses of many of the city's legendary musicians as well as vibrant scenes of second lines and funeral processions. Gillam has been recognized  at many festivals and his work is currently on permanent display in many collections, including New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Foundations archives, Basin Street Visitor Information and Cultural Center, Festival Productions Inc. and Upperline Restaurant. Gillam is the founder and operator of the Algiers Folk art Zone and Blues Museum as well as host of the annual Folk Art Festival.
